The Intelligence Quotient or IQ is a count or number of the level of intelligence that a person has. In an IQ test, the quotient of intelligence of a person is determined and compared to those of others based on the scores of other people on the same test. Many people are relying on this test these days for a number of reasons. For instance, it is used to find out the mental age of a person. This is the understanding levels of the person and his or her abilities at a certain age.
There are a number of tasks that person is tested on in this test and they involve using mental ability. The difficulty levels of the tasks vary and the aim of the test is to gauge memory, numerical capability, reasoning power, scopes of recalling data and definitions. Psychologists have been able to determine a given age in which individuals are able to answer questions correctly in the test. If a child who is twelve years old can answer the questions that a fifteen year old can answer, he or she has a mental age of fifteen and therefore has a high IQ.
There are a number of parts of an IQ test. One part is verbal intelligence and it tests a person’s verbal ability. These abilities include communicating with words, writing and reading. This part of the test examines the amount of vocabulary that one has, his or her capacity to learn verbal material and a person’s ability to use verbal skills in problem solving and logical reasoning. The questions that one is required to answer in this part of the test include analogies, proverb tests, verbal classifications, synonyms, antonyms and verbal puzzles.
The other part of the test is mathematical ability. Mathematical intelligence usually represents a person’s ability to reason and solve elementary mathematical problems. With this type of intelligence, a person is also able to manipulate equations and understand geometric shapes. Mathematical intelligence is a good indicator of general intelligence since many things in life require arithmetical operations even if they do not involve the use of numbers. This part of the test involves solving series problems, mathematical puzzles and filling in missing numbers.
The other part of an IQ test examines one’s spatial reasoning skills. These are the skills that allow a person to manipulate three dimensional objects by rotating and tossing them. The questions that test a person’s spatial intelligence test it without the influence of prior studies. The questions asked can appear baffling but the participant should not give up fast. The activities included in this part of the test include block design, object assembly, picture arrangement, picture concepts, matrix reasoning and picture completion.
The other part of this test is the perceptual/visual skills test that assesses one’s ability to process material that they can see and derive information out of it. People who have a high visualization IQ comprehend information easily and are able to tell others about it. The activities that one is asked to perform in this part of the test include picking out things that are identical from a collection, stringing separate but related pieces of information together and identifying something that does not relate to others in the group.
Another part of the test is one that measures one’s classification skills. One is asked to group items based on a certain criteria. Another part of the IQ test measures a person’s logical reasoning skills. Logical thinking enables a person to extract deductions from information that is supplied to him/her. The other part of the test examines one’s pattern recognition skills. Patterns are present in words, ideas, images and symbols and pattern recognition is very important in the verbal, logical, spatial and numerical skills that a person has.
